Online prediction market Intrade enabled people to put money where their mouth is. In 2008, Hirst's upcoming auction 'Beautiful Forever Inside My Head' was subject to an online bet containing several statements about the total sum of money to be raised in two days.
On September 16 2008, The Guardian reported: 'Despite his nightmares that nobody would bid for a single shark, unicorn or flying pig, Damien Hirst's trailblazing two-day auction at Sotheby's has made a total of £111m.' As such, despite the financial crisis, prices for Hirst's contemporary art exceeded Intrade's predictions by far and broke several of Sotheby's records.
