Online prediction market Intrade enabled people to put money where their mouth is. In 2008, the upcoming auction of Hirst's The Dream was subject of an online bet containing several statements about the height of the winning bid.

On September 16 2008, the New York Times reported: 'Among the big sellers were “The Dream,” a “unicorn” that was actually a foal in a glass and steel tank of formaldehyde. It sold to a telephone bidder for $4.1 million [£2.27M, ed], just above its $3.9 million low estimate.'
