With increasing human settlement in woodlands and savannas, architects should use “firewise” construction, such as nonflammable building materials, abundant ventilation, and thermal-resistant windows, advises University of Wyoming ecologist William Baker. Landscapers can keep the areas surrounding the building free of plants that fuel and spread flames.
