The idealistic house for proletarian commune of future Utopian city will remain unfinished forever, because it is impossible to create new after destroying the past.
The trench for unfinished common house is a metaphor for all soviet fruitless attempts in creating real communism and making all the people happy. The novel also is considered of great prophetic value in terms of describing and explaining Russia, "Russian soul", endless and incessant longing, compassion and deep spirituality.
